Alkaline water and heartburn – Does it help?

Heartburn sometimes occur when we least expect it to and, more often than not, causing us not to perform well in our day to day activities. Heartburn occurs when stomach acid is forced backwards into the esophagus creating a burning sensation. There are several contributors that lead to this common discomfort that may vary from mild to severe. There are some types of foods that contribute to heartburn such as acidic foods, acidic fruits like pineapples and oranges, carbonated drinks among others. Pregnancy and obesity may also contribute to heartburn problems. Caffeinated drinks also contribute greatly to this occurrence not forgetting to mention smoking. A disease affecting the esophagus may also be a culprit.

The human stomach has a pH range of 1.35 to 3.5 which indicates that the stomach is highly acidic. However, this pH level is essential for providing the perfect environment for digestion to take place. The pH scale range is 0 to 14; 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. The term pH stands for power of Hydrogen. The esophagus in the human digestive system does not have the same protective layer as the stomach and as a result gets irritated if the digestive acids come into contact with it. From this understanding, people have always looked for ways around this heartburn problem. In this quest, we come to the question whether alkaline water can serve as a remedy in case heartburn occurs.

Alkaline water has a high pH which means its pH level on the scale is above 7, which is the neutral position. Tap water falls in this neutral range but may vary slightly,

to either side of the scale. Specially produced alkaline water from different companies has a higher rating on the pH scale as high as 9. However, not all labels on drinking water indicate the correct pH level. In our case, we are considering genuine alkaline water. Research has been carried out for several years now trying to establish if alkaline water can be used against heartburn. Through this period, most of the subjects, who were evaluated separately, gave a positive feedback that alkaline water helped in easing the discomfort brought about by heartburn. From the explanations given by the researchers, the alkaline water offered temporary relief by neutralizing the acid that was on the esophagus wall.

However, in as much as the alkaline water offers relief and sometimes clears mild heartburns completely, it is important to address the main cause of the problem and consult a doctor. As stated earlier in the article, different contributors cause heartburns to happen and some may need a doctor’s advice for example obesity. In conclusion, our question as to whether alkaline water can be used to clear heartburns has an answer; alkaline water helps in raising the pH momentarily, high enough to soothe heartburn. Always consider the pH level indicated before using water as a remedy.
