There are two main steps on how an ionizer turns your regular tap water into alkaline water. This involves purification and ionization.
1. Purification: Filtering the Water
The first thing that the ionizer does is filter your tap water so that sediments, bacteria, parasites, and chemicals including lead, metals, and chlorine are all removed.
The filtered water is already clean enough and can be drunk even without the second step. 2. Ionization: Alkalinizing
