The Alkaline Diet: Fab or Fad?

The alkaline diet, also known as the acid-alkaline diet, is widely touted in books and online. It’s based on the idea that the typical American diet raises acid levels in the body. This is said to cause a broad range of health problems, including osteoporosis, cancer, and high blood pressure. Advocates claim that by eating less acid-forming foods, you can lose weight and improve your overall health.

Not everyone agrees, however, and the alkaline diet has some vocal critics as well. So, what’s the real scoop? Here’s what science says about this controversial diet.

Understanding pH Values

The alkaline diet focuses on your body’s pH level. This is a measure of how acidic or alkaline something is, using a scale from zero to 14:

  • 7.0 is neutral

  • Below 7.0 is an acid; the closer to zero, the more acidic the substance

  • Above 7.0 is an alkali (also known as a base); the closer to 14.0, the more alkaline the substance

Different parts of the body normally have different pH values. For example, blood is slightly alkaline (pH 7.4). But the fluid inside cells has a lower pH (6.0 to 7.2), and it’s very acidic inside the stomach (pH 1.4 to 3.5).

It’s a complex system. Fortunately, your body already has multiple ways of keeping everything on track. Your blood contains substances that resist any changes in its pH level. Your lungs also remove acid from your body through exhaled air. And your kidneys excrete acid in urine.

A Closer Look at the Claims

The alkaline diet restricts a long list of foods, which are thought to make the body more acidic. These foods include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, and wheat products. Specific versions of the diet may also exclude other foods, such peanuts, walnuts, corn, cranberries, plums, and sweets. In place of these foods, the diet emphasizes most fruits and vegetables, which are thought to keep the body more alkaline.

Following such a strict diet can be tough. Plus, the diet may not work well—at least, not for the reasons advertised. Research shows virtually no effect on blood pH levels, although a change in diet does alter the pH of urine.

One research review found no clear-cut evidence that the alkaline diet improves bone health. Another turned up only a single study that looked at the diet’s cancer-fighting potential, and that study didn’t show any benefit.

The Diet’s Secret Ingredient?

On the plus side, the alkaline diet is rich in fruits and vegetables. That in itself is beneficial. Fruits and veggies help manage your weight by filling you up with relatively few calories. They help control your blood pressure and may protect against some cancers. Plus, they contain vitamins and minerals that are good for your bones.

Whether you’re aiming to lose weight or enhance your health, eating fruits and vegetables can help you reach those goals. But following the alkaline diet with its long list of off-limits foods is harder than simply upping your fruit and veggie intake. So far, there’s no research showing that it’s worth the extra effort.

10 Highly Alkaline Foods

What Does Acid/Alkaline Mean?

Our bodies have what’s called a pH balance, which measures the acidity in our blood. That level can determine our overall state of health – and whether or not we’re at risk for serious illness.

Our blood is measured on a pH scale that ranges from 0 to 14. Zero is considered most acidic, while fourteen is highly alkaline. The ideal pH of our blood for optimal health is around 7.35, which is neither too acidic or too alkaline, but neutral.

The reason the acid-alkaline balance matters to you is because it directly impacts your state of health.

An acidic environment is considered the perfect setting for illness and disease to thrive in.

Previously, the acid-alkaline diet was thought to be some crazy, vegan hippie myth. But even Dr. Otto Warburg, who dedicated his life to researching cancer cells, won a Nobel prize for proving that cancer cells cannot survive in an alkaline environment

As mentioned above, one of the primary factors that influence our blood’s pH are the kind of foods we eat.

All foods can be categorized as acidic, alkaline, or neutral. A food’s pH isn’t measured by its physical properties, but by the residue that’s left in the body once the food has been metabolized.

For example, we’d intuitively consider a lemon acidic because it has a sour taste and the ability to erode our tooth enamel. But once it’s been metabolized by the body, lemon leaves the blood alkaline. This explains why a seemingly acidic food can “turn” alkaline in the body.

To determine whether a food is alkalizing or acidic to the body, each food is measured on a PRAL scale.

What Is PRAL?

PRAL isn’t the sound a dying cat makes – rather, it stands for the “Potential Renal Acid Load” of a food. Instead of simply categorizing a food as acidic or alkaline, PRAL measures the exact amount of acidity or alkalinity of a food once it’s been metabolized

Each food on the PRAL scale scores in a negative, neutral, or positive value. Any food that has a negative value is considered an alkaline food (or a base), while any food with a positive value is acidic.

For example, broccoli has a score of -1.2, which means it’s alkalizing – but not as alkalizing as eggplant, which scores at -3.4.

Lean beef, on the other hand, has a score of +7.8, which means it’s highly acidic.

To get a little more technical, PRAL measures the acidity or alkalinity of a food based on the amount of minerals, protein, and phosphorus that’s left behind in the body once it’s been metabolized.

Since protein and phosphorus break down into sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, they are considered acidifying to the body. When an alkaline food is metabolized, it will leave behind alkaline trace minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

The foods that rank most alkaline on the PRAL scale are fruits, vegetables, and a few nuts and seeds. The foods that rank most acidic are the foods many of us eat each day, such as chicken, grains, eggs, peanuts, fish, seafood, and dairy products.

In fact, I hate to be the messenger here, but parmesan cheese has a score of +34.2 on the PRAL scale, which classifies it as one of the most acidifying foods in our diets.

Now, you may be wondering how dairy could be classified as acidic, seeing as how it contains calcium, which is an alkaline mineral. The reason dairy is acidic is because it contains much more phosphorus (which is acidic) than calcium

As a quick side note, how the PRAL table measures the acidity of a food isn’t to be confused with how our blood’s pH is measured.

If we were applying PRAL scores to the pH scale, the 7.8 score of lean beef would suggest that it’s alkaline, or neutral. Unlike the pH scale, a food with a negative score actually means it’s alkalizing to the body. Make sense?

The Problem with Being Too Acidic

We’ve briefly touched on one of the most detrimental effects of an acidic internal environment, which is the encouragement of disease – specifically cancer.

But being too acidic can come with other symptoms that occur far before a serious illness results. In fact, being too acidic can result in muscle wasting and reduced bone density. This is partially due to the fact that many acidic foods are low in nutrients that promote musculoskeletal health, such as potassium and calcium

To get slightly more scientific in terms of bone health, an acidic environment has been shown to  encourage the activity of osteoclast cells. Osteoclasts are cells that break down bone.

In contrast, an alkaline environment has been shown to encourage the activity of osteoblasts, which are the cells that help build bone

In addition to the long-term conditions that can result from being too acidic, there are short-term symptoms that may also suggest your body is more on the acidic end of the pH scale. These symptoms include:

  • Low energy
  • Exhaustion
  • Acne
  • Brain fog or confusion
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Frequent headaches
  • Frequent colds
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Digestive issues such as bloating

Now, the body contains natural compounds such as bicarbonate, that act as buffers to neutralize blood acidity. These buffers help prevent extreme drops in blood pH. This is an important defense not only against acidifying foods, but also against other factors that promote acidity in the body, such as chronic stress

Strenuous exercise can also promote blood acidity because it encourages the release of lactic acid from the muscle tissue

While your body has a natural defense system against having an acidic blood pH, it is possible for these buffers to get worn out over time – especially if several factors are present that negatively impact your pH, such as stress and a highly acidic diet.

For this reason, it’s important to support your body by including alkaline foods in your diet whenever possible.

This isn’t to say you must go raw vegan and eat only alkalizing fruits and vegetables for the rest of your life.

While it’s rare, it’s still possible for the blood to become too alkaline. But since the modern diet is typically higher in acidifying foods, including alkalizing foods into your diet each day will help neutralize your blood pH and improve your health in numerous ways.

Now, let’s go into more detail with this high alkaline foods list.

Alkaline water and heartburn – Does it help?

Heartburn sometimes occur when we least expect it to and, more often than not, causing us not to perform well in our day to day activities. Heartburn occurs when stomach acid is forced backwards into the esophagus creating a burning sensation. There are several contributors that lead to this common discomfort that may vary from mild to severe. There are some types of foods that contribute to heartburn such as acidic foods, acidic fruits like pineapples and oranges, carbonated drinks among others. Pregnancy and obesity may also contribute to heartburn problems. Caffeinated drinks also contribute greatly to this occurrence not forgetting to mention smoking. A disease affecting the esophagus may also be a culprit.

The human stomach has a pH range of 1.35 to 3.5 which indicates that the stomach is highly acidic. However, this pH level is essential for providing the perfect environment for digestion to take place. The pH scale range is 0 to 14; 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. The term pH stands for power of Hydrogen. The esophagus in the human digestive system does not have the same protective layer as the stomach and as a result gets irritated if the digestive acids come into contact with it. From this understanding, people have always looked for ways around this heartburn problem. In this quest, we come to the question whether alkaline water can serve as a remedy in case heartburn occurs.

Alkaline water has a high pH which means its pH level on the scale is above 7, which is the neutral position. Tap water falls in this neutral range but may vary slightly,

to either side of the scale. Specially produced alkaline water from different companies has a higher rating on the pH scale as high as 9. However, not all labels on drinking water indicate the correct pH level. In our case, we are considering genuine alkaline water. Research has been carried out for several years now trying to establish if alkaline water can be used against heartburn. Through this period, most of the subjects, who were evaluated separately, gave a positive feedback that alkaline water helped in easing the discomfort brought about by heartburn. From the explanations given by the researchers, the alkaline water offered temporary relief by neutralizing the acid that was on the esophagus wall.

However, in as much as the alkaline water offers relief and sometimes clears mild heartburns completely, it is important to address the main cause of the problem and consult a doctor. As stated earlier in the article, different contributors cause heartburns to happen and some may need a doctor’s advice for example obesity. In conclusion, our question as to whether alkaline water can be used to clear heartburns has an answer; alkaline water helps in raising the pH momentarily, high enough to soothe heartburn. Always consider the pH level indicated before using water as a remedy.

Alkaline Water Machine Prices and More

The Key Features of an Alkaline Water Machine

People have a lot of health issues nowadays. One of the best ways to prevent common health problems is by drinking plenty of water. Making sure you have enough alkaline in your water is crucial.

There are many health benefits to drinking alkaline water. If you live in a metropolitan area, your tap water is most likely too acidic. The best way to reduce the acidic levels of your water is with an alkaline water machine. The alkaline water machine price will be dependent on its quality and brand.

In this article, we will discuss the benefits of an alkaline machine and how to choose one.

Why Should You Use An Alkaline Water Machine?

Best Prices for Alkaline Water MachinesAlkaline water is a kind of water in which the ph level is higher than 7. It helps in flushing body toxins, eradicates acid waste, fights illnesses and constipation.

Creating an alkaline environment in your body makes it difficult for viruses and bacteria to thrive. It will also detoxify your body. It detoxifies your body by removing acidic wastes that come from the environment, unhealthy foods, prescription drugs and from the aging process.

Most people tend to eat unhealthy foods and have a highly acidic diet. These types of foods cause your body cells to suffocate. A highly acidic diet will also weaken your immune system. Alkaline water washes away waste products from cells and tissues created by these toxins.

Alkaline water also improves hydration of the body. Hydrating is highly essential to maintaining excellent health. This type of enriched water is also rich in alkaline minerals like calcium and magnesium.

Rich alkaline water acts as an antioxidant in your body. It will also protect your body from harmful free radicals. One of the best benefits of this type of water is that cancer cells cannot thrive in alkaline.

Doctors will commonly advise people with health issues to drink alkaline enriched water. This is why determining alkaline water machine price can be substantial when taking steps to healthier living.

Important Features For Alkaline Machines

The key components of an alkaline machine are the filters, plates, Ph/ORP Range, and the warranty/company reputation. Let’s discuss each one of these key factors:

Your machine must have the best quality. Filters catch any impurities found in water. The single filtration system is fine if the source is clean, but if it is coming from an unknown source or it is tap water go for the double filtration system. The life span and cost of replacement depends on the brand you will buy. Ask and shop for the best alkaline water machine price.

From among the three types of plates, it is advisable to use the flat and solid type. The mesh and slotted types may be less expensive, but both are of lesser quality. For flat and solid type, you need to use more plates, meaning no less than three. Using less than three plates will not serve the real purpose.

Ph/ORP Range

Your machine must be capable of producing both acidic and alkaline water. Choose one which has a pH range of 4-11 and at the minimum a negative 800 ORP. ORP or Oxygen Reduction Potential measures the number of electrons in the water. A higher negative ORP is beneficial.Save Money on Your New Alkaline Water Machine

Warranty and Company Reputation

Check for the company track record. The company must be ISO9000 certified. Provision for warranty should be at least five years.

If you are shopping around, see to it that the alkaline water machine price is reasonable. Check for the essential features.

Ensure good health for your family by investing in an alkaline water machine. There are important features which a quality machine should have. Check and shop around from reputable companies only. Do your research and avoid scammers.

Tips to Help Choose a Great drinking Water Filtration System for your Home

Our body needs clean water to stay normal and healthy. We need filters to clean it and make it safe to drink. There are different types of filters depending on the
contaminants in your tap water.

Our environment is not as clean as it used to be. The rise of industrial manufacturing plants and other technological sites continue to pollute our surroundings. It does not affect only the air we breathe in, but also the water we drink. People do not trust the natural source anymore. The water from our faucets are not that clean anymore and could pose health problems when drank in great amounts.

This phenomenon brought rise to the home filter systems. Let’s deal more with this below.

water filtration systems

Steps on Choosing a Home Filter System

Filtration systems remove the impurities out of tap water. The most common models use reverse or carbon osmosis filtration. In purchasing a filter for your home, make sure that it is duly certified by NSF International. This means that it has passed the standard requirements of a good filtration system.

Choose the right filter that fits your faucet, and have it installed by a skilled plumber. Here are some tips to consider in choosing your filter.

First, hire a professional to test your water. You will know what kind and how much filtration is needed based on the test results.

You can choose if you want to have a faucet-mounted system or other types. Faucet-mounted systems require little time to install and are inexpensive though they require in-line systems or regular filter changes. In-line systems may cost a lot of money but are more comprehensive. In-line systems only require rare filter changes.

Look into a certified carbon filter by the NSF for either system if the test results come back with chloroform, chlorine, organic chemicals or pesticides. Carbon filters are not proven effective against heavy metals and lead as well as fluoride and chloroform along with microbial contaminants.

Decide whether you want to use an “in-line reverse osmosis filtering system” if the test results indicate a presence of ferrous iron, sodium, fluoride, organic contaminants and lead. The reverse osmosis system wastes a lot of water and puts a limited amount of water for drinking purposes. Approximately 4 gallons of water are wasted during the filtration for a gallon of drinking water. You will need a softener along with the in-line system if the calcium count of your water is high.

Consider a filtration system with a “performance indication device” or cutoff meter that tells you when it is time for a filter change.

Types of Home Filtration Systems

drinking h20There are two major types of filtration systems, and these are “whole house filters” and “point of use filters.” The first one cleans the water for the entire house. The second type filters the water and makes it clean up to a point when it is being used.

Cleaning the water for the entire house is difficult and costly, and this is why “point of use filters” is the most practical to use. Examples of these are the pitcher filters, shower filters, refrigerator filters and countertop filters.

The most popular types are those attached to faucets. This filter is simply screwed onto the faucet. There is a variant that could be attached to the showerhead also. Such types are usually based on carbon filtration system. They are simple and easy to use, cheap and do not cause any problems upon installation. The major downside of these types is that they must be changed frequently to achieve the best results.

Another kind is the countertop filter. It can remove up to 99% of contaminants. You can sometimes attach UV light source for more effective cleaning. There is also the under a sink or in-line filters. It is installed by professionals somewhere not visible to the residents.

There are also various types of filter and when doing your search for the best filter you need to consider your needs. Whole house filters, for example, do exactly what they say. Filter the water for the entire house. Perfect except for the fact that they are more expensive than, say, a simple drinking filter. Great if you can afford one.

How portable do you need your system to be? If you’re looking for a highly portable solution that would be of use both at home and while traveling, you need to look at Caravan filters. The water sent through this system would be cleansed of all dirt, rust, bad taste, and odor. It can be plumbed into the water supply for home use or can be carried around while traveling to filter the water and make it fit for drinking. You wouldn’t have to spend another dollar on bottled water as now you have your source clean drinking water.

Some filtration systems may require a few drillings in the wall during installation. While this shouldn’t be a problem if you own your home, people who are renting, usually don’t want to deal with any drillings. Counter top filtration systems are the perfect solution to households that are renting. However, with more permanent solutions like the reverse osmosis filters, you would have a greater output of clean potable water. It is advisable to opt for the more permanent filter Sydney solutions if it is possible.

Full House or Not

A full house filtration system is attached to the home’s main water line, and it gets rids of all the impurities and the contaminants even before the water reaches the tap. This is ideal for a residential block or other commercial setups where there is a need for drinking water in greater quantities. This system might not be necessary for a home. You could check out some other systems such as the reverse osmosis filters, caravan filter, three-stage filtration system, etc.
Based on your requirements, you should be able to search for and get yourself the perfect filter, and never have to worry about portable water free of chlorine and contaminants.

Alkaline Water Filter Systems

If you have heard about the benefits of alkaline water and think that it might be a good solution for your home than all you have to do is choose a system. Choosing an alkaline water ionizer is simple, we have reviewed the best products on the market which you can purchase directly from amazon.

3 Reasons You Should be Drinking Alkaline Water

Water is very essential to our bodies. You will realize that all living organisms normally depend on it in order to survive. It serves many purposes in our bodies. You will realize that it is normally used in the digestion system, circulatory system, excretion system and so on. Most of our body physiological processes normally rely on it in order to take place. This is the reason why you should be hydrated all the time. It is always advisable to take at least 8 glasses of water on a daily basis. This can help you a great deal.

Did you know that alkaline water is beneficial to your body?

The following are the 3 reasons to alkaline water:

1. Aids in restoring the body’s pH balance.

Most people normally like taking fast foods. You will realize that these processed foods are normally readily available in supermarkets, hotels and so on. These processed foods can have adverse effects on your body. They can increase the acidity levels in your body. You will realize that the higher the acidity in a human body, the higher the strain put on the immune system. This can make you to catch common cold and other ailments. Acidity can also be caused by the environment a person lives in. If there is a lot of pollution in the air, the body can become very acidic. This is the reason why you should drink alkaline water. It can help in neutralizing the acidity and can assist in returning the body’s optimal pH balance. You will realize that when the body is at a neutral pH balance, the immune system begins to work at its optimal level.

2. It is a potent antioxidant

You will realize that free radicals can be the cause of damage to cells in the body. Antioxidants normally help to slow the oxidation process in free radicals and prevent them from causing damage to the cells in the body. Antioxidants are also known to keep the immune system operating at optimal levels. This can also help in dealing with aging issues. This is because alkaline water normally makes your skin tissues to remain hydrated. Better hydration of these tissues can actually ensure that your skin remains elastic and doesn’t have wrinkles.

3. It is easily absorbed in the body.

You will realize that alkaline water can easily be absorbed in the body. This actually makes your body to get hydrated quicker. Water molecules from a tap comes out in a cluster of between 15 and 20 molecules. Alkaline breaks the molecules into smaller clusters of between 5 and 6 molecules. These smaller molecules can be absorbed much more efficiently in the body. Remember that water makes up to 70% of the human body. The more efficiently the body absorbs lots of water, the better a person feels.

It is true to say that alkaline water is great for you. It is important that you drink alkaline water from time to time. Most people have enjoyed the benefits of alkaline water. Drink water from a quality alkaline water ionizer and you will not regret it.

Does alkaline water boost the immune system?

Water keeps us alive. Our body is composed of 70 to 80% of water. It regulates the temperature of our body and also aids in the proper digestion of the food we eat. Toxins in our body are being washed out by water and it replenishes the required fluid the body needs. Drinking the right quality of it will make us healthier. Drinking alkaline antioxidant water will bring us excellent health.

What is Antioxidant Water?

It is water with a a pH value of more than 7. To drinking water that has a pH of 7 balances and maintains our body which will prevent us from diseases. Regular or tap water is neutral, to make antioxidant water, adding a little baking soda to it. If you do not want to do it on your own, there are alkaline treated bottles available in my grocery and drug stores. The extra amount of acid present in your body weakens your immune system and can cause several diseases. On the other hand, if your body is alkaline, it will function better. Alkaline water acts to neutralize the acids present in the body and enables it to flush out the toxic, acidic waste.

What Does It Do?

Potent antioxidant

It slows down aging process making you look younger. With free radicals in the body, oxidation takes place which brings diseases and aging. A concrete example of oxidation is when you cut the apple and it turns brown. The antioxidant slows or prevents oxidation. Drinking antioxidant water keeps you away from diseases while looking young.

Alkalinity in action

For our body to function properly, it should neither be too acid or too alkaline. Drinking purified water can counterbalance the acidity of our body which is commonly caused by stress, dieting, pollution and drinking too many sodas. If a body is too acidic, diseases are easily acquired. Drinking purified water will give your body the right amount of alkalinity which can increase your immune system.

Detoxifying agent

A clean colon keeps you from colon diseases. Eating a lot of food that has a lot of saturated fat, dairy, alcohol and processed food can create plaque on the wall of the colon. This plaque can block your body from absorbing the nutrients that your body needs. As long as you drink alkaline, you are assured that your colon has been detoxified and cleaned. It aids in flushing away those barriers on your colon so you would have a spotless colon which would prevent you from colon ailments.

Ionization split the group of water molecules to smaller micro-groups, the reduced size makes it easier to pass throughout the cells walls which can make the cells hydrated. Cells have enough hydration and nutrition for it to properly function. The best thing about purified water is, it taste sweet making you drink more.

Balances your body

Once you tasted it, you would really wonder why you have not used it before. You can really taste the difference between the alkaline water compared to the acidic and polluted water that you used before. Drinking it would make you looking young due to its antioxidant agent, aids in your weight loss, improves your immune system and easily absorb the nutrients your body needs.

How to make Alkaline Water?

Now that you read about what it does, let’s talk about the question you might have in mind. Where to get it? It is highly recommended you invest in an ionizer. These machines can be expensive but not all, some are expensive and others are priced fairly.

I’m assuming you have already heard of the term pH balance’ before. Do you know what it means? Basically, the pH scale measures the alkalinity or the acidity of something. Because we are talking about alkaline foods, what we are concerned about is the pH level of your body.
